For many people, moving into a first home is an exciting milestone. It is a chance to build independence, make your own decisions and create a place that feels like home. 

For TC and his sister, JC, it was also a journey filled with uncertainty.  

For a long time, they were living in a family home that was no longer able to meet their needs, putting them at risk of homelessness. Both are autistic and wanted something many people work towards: a place of their own where they could live independently and build a stable future together. They hoped to find a two bedroom home where they could support each other while building their independence.  

Finding a home, however, was only part of the challenge.  

After being referred to Pathfinder by their Family Social Worker, TC and JC worked with a Progression Coach to explore every possible housing option. They registered for housing with the local council and Jigsaw Homes, were placed in a priority housing band because of their circumstances and housing needs, and also looked at affordable private rented homes to make sure every possible option was considered.  

Like many people preparing to live independently for the first time, they also needed to develop the practical skills that would help them manage a tenancy successfully.  

While waiting for suitable accommodation, the Progression Coach helped them prepare for independent living. TC and JC learned budgeting skills using a simple budgeting tool, helping them plan how they would manage money and household costs.  

During this time, JC secured additional employment, increasing her income and strengthening their financial position. With support from Pathfinder, the pair were able to remain in the family home while they waited for the right opportunity.  

That opportunity came when they were offered a two bedroom property through Jigsaw Homes as part of the local authority housing scheme. After a period of preparation and uncertainty, the offer represented more than a new address. It was the chance to start building the independent future they had been working towards.  

Receiving the keys was a big moment, but moving into a new home comes with plenty of practical things to put in place. TC was supported to apply for Housing Benefit, which was awarded and helped make the tenancy affordable. They were also helped to set up utility accounts, arrange Direct Debit payments and apply for Council Tax Reduction, giving them more confidence in managing their finances.  

A house also needs the essentials that help turn it into a home.  

To help them settle in, TC and JC successfully applied to a local resettlement scheme. Through this support, they received essential household items, including a fridge, electric oven, washing machine, bed and mattress. Furnishing their new home also helped them begin building links with support available in the local community.  

As they started their tenancy, two Tenancy Support Workers from Jigsaw Homes were assigned to help them manage and sustain their new home. TC was also supported to register with a local GP, helping both siblings access ongoing practical and health support in their new area.  

Today, TC and JC are settled in a home that meets their needs and supports the independence they wanted to achieve. They have strengthened their budgeting skills, improved their financial stability, built a network of support around them and successfully established a home of their own.
