The Bury Recovery Forum returned last week, bringing together members of the recovery community and local charities for a morning of inspiration and motivation.
The popular event is organised by Project FREE and NHS Greater Manchester Mental Health and took place at Radcliffe FC. The morning included motivational speakers, songs from the recovery choir, certificates – and of course, a buffet.
Rolonde Bradshaw from Red Rose Recovery – who organise the Blackburn-based Roots Community Recovery Forum event – was one of many speakers to take to the stage to share inspirational words.
He said: “Forums are important as they connect people in recovery with each other and recognise the importance of connection. They inspire hope”.
Afterwards, certificates were awarded to staff and colleagues – including Terry, who was supported when leaving prison by Red Rose and Project FREE.
Celebrating over two years sober, he said: “Because of the support I’ve been linked in with, I think I’m going to be able to stay sober this time… I am, because we are”.
The ‘Shine in Recovery’ choir then gave an emotional rendition of ‘recovery songs’, including Wonderwall – an anthem to all Mancunians.
Supported by Gateway
Gateway part-funded the morning, with generous anonymous donations from the recovery community ensuring its ongoing success.
Gill Ross, a Floating Support Worker from Gateway, said: “The speakers were very inspirational and the songs and stories told were very inspirational. I think the Project FREE programme is going from strength to strength”.
The Floating Support Team at Gateway recently retained their contract in Bury, ensuring they can keep providing their vital services and support for the next four years.
The next Bury Recovery Forum will be held later this year to celebrate the event’s first anniversary.
